A check engine light means one of the computers on board saw a reading outside the range it expects. It tells you something is wrong. It does not tell you what.
At Northside Auto we read the stored trouble codes, then test the system those codes point at. The code tells us where to look. The testing tells us what actually failed.
What a trouble code tells us
A trouble code describes what the computer noticed. It's not the name of a broken part. One code can have several possible causes behind it, and only one of them is the reason the light came on.
That is why the testing matters. We check the components and the wiring the codes implicate, so the failed part is found rather than assumed, and you get told what we found before any repair is quoted.
Clearing a code switches the light off for a while. It does not repair anything. As soon as the computer sees the same fault again, the light comes back.

Most lights trace back to a short list. Any one of these will turn it on, and the code on its own rarely tells you which.
