Out of province inspections in Lethbridge

Moving a vehicle into Alberta means one more item on a list that is already long. The good news is that this part is predictable. An out of province inspection in Lethbridge is measured against a set provincial standard, it takes about two hours, and you leave knowing exactly where the vehicle stands.

How the process works in Alberta

Buy the form at a registry office
Start at any Alberta Registry Office and ask for a Request for Vehicle Inspection Form. Bring proof of ownership and valid photo identification. The form does not expire, so nothing is lost if you buy it now and book the inspection later.

Book the inspection and bring the form
Bring the vehicle and the form to the shop. The inspection takes around two hours depending on the make, model, and condition of the vehicle.

Get your Record of Inspection
You receive a signed Record of Inspection whether the vehicle passes or fails. If it fails, that record names every item that did not meet the standard, which makes it your repair list as well.

Take the certificate to registries
A pass earns an Out of Province Vehicle Inspection Certificate. That certificate goes to an Alberta Registries Agent, and there is a firm deadline attached to it.
If the vehicle fails, the repairs have to be completed within 10 days of the original inspection. That clock is set by the province, not by us, so it's worth booking the repair work in the same day you get your results.
The 14 day certificate deadline
Passing is not quite the finish line. The certificate has to reach an Alberta Registries Agent while it's still current, and current means 14 days from the completed inspection.
Take it in later than that and the agent will refuse it. There is no extension and no partial credit: the vehicle goes back on the hoist and the entire inspection is done again from the start. It's the one mistake in this process worth going out of your way to avoid, and the simplest way to avoid it is to plan the registry visit before you drop the vehicle off.
Once the vehicle passes, present the Out of Province Vehicle Inspection Certificate to an Alberta Registries Agent within 14 days of the completed inspection. After 14 days it's refused and the whole inspection has to be redone.
If the vehicle does not pass
A fail is not a verdict on the vehicle. It's a list, and most of what lands on it is ordinary wear that shows up on any vehicle that has been driven through a few winters somewhere else.
